The Bowes MuseumSurrounded by beautiful gardens, the first sight of The Bowes Museum never fails to amaze. The French-style chateau, founded by wealthy businessman John Bowes and his French wife Joséphine, was designed as a museum to house their acquisitions. The couple were avid collectors of beautiful works of art and the Museum, which opened in 1892, was a natural progression of their shared passion.
The designated collection includes some of the best examples of European Fine and Decorative art in the UK, with works by Goya, El Greco and Canaletto. It also features the finest ceramics, furniture and textiles.
An endearing exhibit that stays in the memory is a Silver Swan musical automaton, played every day to fascinated onlookers. The story of the Museum is recounted as you wander through its galleries, with an audio guide and variety of interactive materials to educate and entertain. A world-class exhibition programme complements the permanent collections. |
