Mount Usher Gardens - AVOCA

Mount Usher is a privately owned garden of twenty acres, standing in the sheltered valley of the Vartry river as it flows down from the Devil's Glen, 27 miles south of Dublin and 2 miles from the sea. The site is protected from the wind, except from the northwest; the soil is alluvial gravel or sand overlaying patches of heavy clay, and is quite free from lime. Rainfall averages about 26 inches per year.

If winter frosts exceed 10 degrees, considerable damage is done, for many plants are grown in the open here which normally require the protection of glasshouses. The House around which the garden was founded was attached to a water mill which used the power of the Killiskey river (a tributary of the Vartry) to turn its wheel.
