Talbot Botanic GardenThe Talbot Botanic Garden is a 22 acre garden within the 290 acre estate of Malahide with the Castle centre stage. The Castle was home to the Talbot family for 800 years until the death of Lord Milo Talbot in 1973. In 1976 the Local Authority who is increasing the plant collection acquired the estate. The garden comprises a collection of mainly non-ericaceous plants numbering in excess of 5000 species with a particular emphasis on Southern Hemisphere plants particularly Australasian and Chilean species. It is in two distinct sections, an 18 acre area known as the West Lawn comprising trees, shrubs and the hardier herbaceous plants and bulbs. In this area genera which are well represented are Escallonia, Euonymus, Berberis, Deutzia and Philadelphus species. It holds the N.C.C.P.G. of Olearia. The Walled Garden of 4 acres contains the more tender plants mainly from the Southern Hemisphere.
This garden is sub-divided into 7distinct sections, each with its own particular range of plants. It also boasts seven glasshouses of varying sizes including a very elegant Victorian conservatory. A smaller glasshouse houses a very fine collection of Primula auricula varities., (this collection is within the walled gardenand not in the main garden). Dogs are welcome in the Park only, not in the garden. |
