Rowallane GardenRowallane Garden is located 11 miles south of Belfast and 1 mile south of Saintfield in the rolling hills of County Down. Formerly the farm belonging to the Reverend John Moore who acquired it in the 1860s, it has become one of the foremost gardens in this century in the British Isles. Rowallane soil is acid and thin; it overlies whinstone rock which, parts of the garden, protrudes in massive outcrops that have been utilised for massed planting of azalea and rhododendron. High rainfall and even temperatures provide ideal growing conditions. The Reverend John Moore gradually enlarged this farmhouse, added the stable block, and planted the Pleasure Grounds. The stone seats and cairns are ornaments created by him. On his death he left Rowallane to his nephew, Hugh Armytage Moore, who had a rare gift for planning and a great eye for plants.
He sought to choose a plant for a place; very little landscaping has ever been carried out at Rowallane. Rare specimens, sent back from the Far East by such collectors as E H Wilson, G Forrest and F Kingdon-Ward, appear throughout the garden. In 1942 the Royal Horticultural Society award Hugh Armytage Moore the Victoria Medal of Honour for his contribution to horticulture. |
