Paxton House, Gallery & Country ParkBuilt for a dashing young Scottish laird, Patrick Home of Billie, on a ridge overlooking the majestic River Tweed, Paxton House is one of the finest 18th century Palladian country houses in Britain.
There is plenty to see and do at Paxton House for the whole family. Hunt for Paxton Ted in the House, or be a nature detective and search for red squirrels in the grounds. Complete one of our activity sheets for young visitors, and find out about what it was like to live in Paxton House when it was first built! Patrick Home's spectacular gold and silver costume worn at the Royal Court in Berlin in 1750 (and his horse!) is on display.
Enjoy a tour of twelve fully furnished rooms featuring the very best of furniture by Thomas Chippendale, and marvel at the rococo styled decorated walls and ceilings. Paxton House can also boast the largest private picture gallery in any country house in Scotland. Here you can see over 70 paintings on loan from the National Galleries of Scotland.
With over 80 acres of gardens, woodland and park-land and a mile of the breathtaking River Tweed for you to enjoy, together with the Regency Shop, Stables tea-room, adventure playground, net fishing museum, working Georgian kitchen, picnic areas, and new in 2007 the Ellem Rod fishing exhibition - the oldest fishing club in the world. |
