Burton Constable HallSituated near the Holderness coast, Burton Constable is an Elizabethan House which was built about 1570 incorporating a medieval manor house. During the 18th century, William Constable (1721-1791) made extensive alterations to the fabric and was also responsible for bringing together the various collections. The interior decoration dates mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries, although evidence of earlier work still survives behind the walls and under floors.
Unrivalled access to thirty rooms, the public are offered a unique insight into the patronage of the Constable family, who have lived here ever since the house was built. Superb 18th and 19th century interiors, including a Gallery, Great Hall, Dining and Drawing Rooms, Bedrooms, Chapel, Chinese Room and a fascinating Lamp Room. Outside the house there are gardens with statues, an orangery, stable block and wildfowl lakes set in 300 acres of parkland landscaped by 'Capability' Brown in the 18th century. The historic parkland surrounding Burton Constable Hall is to be restored to its former glory by virtue of funding provided by the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. |
