Ripley CastleRipley Castle has been home to the Ingilby family for twenty six generations and Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby together with their five children continue the tradition. The guided tours are amusing and informative, following the lives and loves of one family for nearly 700 years. The historic Gatehouse, 550 years old, sold in 2000, still bears the bullet marks from Cromwell's Army after the Battle of Marston Moor. The Old Tower houses splendid armour, books, paneling and a Priest's Hiding Hole. The original oak ceiling and wall paneling create a wonderful atmosphere of antiquity. In the Georgian wing you can appreciate the fine paintings, china furnishings and chandeliers collected by the family over the Centuries.
The extensive Victorian Walled Gardens have been transformed and are a colourful delightful through every season. In the Kitchen Gardens you can see an extensive selection of rare vegetables from the Henry Doubleday Research Association. The restored Victorian Hot Houses are home to a tropical plant collection with cacti, ferns and the National Hyacinth collection whose scent is breathtaking. The Castle and Gardens lie at the heart of the Ripley Castle Estate with an extensive Deer Park and panoramic Lakes. |
