Moorlands Garden

Only the river flowing through it reveals that 300 hundred years ago Moorlands garden, tucked out of sight in a deep Ashdown Forest valley, rang to the sounds of picks and hammers mining ironstone, and was filled with the reek of furnaces smelting the metal. What was once at the heart of Sussex iron industry has been transformed into a garden where formality and a kind of gentle wilderness come together.

The long herbacious border leads down a spring dell across a yew hedged lawn down to the water garden and river where there are ponds and streams. A special feature of the garden is the many fine specimen trees, making it a small arboretum.
