CharlestonWhen the artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant moved to Charleston in 1916 they immediately began to transform the house with decorations. They painted the walls, doors, furniture and ceramics in their own unique and inspirational style and created original textiles. They also collected works of art by Renoir, Picasso, Matthew Smith, Sickert and Delacroix. Charleston became a meeting place for various members of the group of artists, writers and intellectuals known as Bloomsbury, which included the author, Virginia Woolf and the economist Maynard Keynes.
Guided tours of the house add a human touch and visitors can also explore the beautiful walled garden, with its mosaics, statues and ponds. Tea and cakes are available in the tearoom, made to original Charleston recipes. The Charleston shop is Craft Council selected, with a rich variety of ceramics, painted furniture, textiles, clothes and books on sale. |
